“Be the change you wish to see in the world” - Mahatma Gandhi
I am K Krishnaveni, from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. In India, especially in rural areas, #waste is a severe threat to public health and #cleanliness and if not managed efficiently, it could have an undesirable implication on our overall wellbeing. I took it upon myself to address this situation and have been working in #ApolloTyresFoundation (ATF) Clean My Village project for the last 5 years, wherein I maintain 100% segregated waste collected in my area.
Over the years, with my active engagement with the community I have been able to inspire over 22 women by creating a positive perspective towards waste management and how income can be generated out of it. Through my sustained efforts, the area has become free of dustbins and dumping yards.
The members of ATF’s Nirmal Brigade selected me as treasurer of Common Livelihood Group (CLG), Vallakottai, wherein I manage the finance part of CLG's Agarbathi business. Through #upcycling of waste, the members have earned INR 2.23 lakh by making natural agarbatti (incense sticks) and dhoop cones through waste flowers.
I also set up a kitchen #garden, which generates a monthly income of INR 25,000. Apart from an increase in income, the garden also helped me to ensure food #security and improve the #nutrition status of my family.
If there is something that I have learned in my journey, it is that the leap from what we do and what we are capable of doing is where change can be seen. The moment we invest our abilities towards bringing about a change, we are already halfway there.
